Artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly becoming part of everyday life in health care, from how clinics book appointments to how hospitals manage information and documentation. For many students, that brings a mix of excitement and worry. Will AI be allowed in school? Will it replace jobs? Will patients be safe? 

The truth is more balanced. AI can be useful in health care and in the classroom, but it also comes with real risks and ethical responsibilities. That is why the future of AI in health care is about more than just new tools. It can help bring about stronger training and more in-clinic efficiency, all while ensuring human judgment stays at the center.

What “AI in Health Care” Really Means 

When most people hear “AI,” they picture chatbots and robots. In health care, AI is usually simpler than that and works in the background. It’s specially integrated and vetted software that helps with specific tasks, such as: 

  • Turning speech into text for charting 
  • Sorting and summarizing information 
  • Flagging patterns in large sets of data 
  • Powering chats for basic questions and scheduling 
  • Supporting clinical diagnostic tools (in regulated, controlled ways) 

Some AI systems in health care can be considered medical devices, which means they must meet regulatory expectations for safety, validation, transparency, and ongoing monitoring.  

How This Affects Students and Educators Right Now 

AI is not a future topic anymore. It’s here, right now. Statistics Canada reported that 12.2% of businesses used AI to produce goods or deliver services in the previous 12 months (second quarter of 2025), up from 6.1% a year earlier.  

Health care organizations and employers are also exploring AI faster than before. In Statistics Canada’s results on expected AI use, the share of businesses in health care and social assistance expecting to use AI over the next 12 months grew from 11.4% (third quarter of 2024) to 23.2% (third quarter of 2025).  

This is why career training programs need to talk about AI clearly and responsibly. Students will see AI tools in the workplace, and they need to know how to use them safely and when not to use them. 

Common Concerns from Students, Patients, and Educators 

Addressing Student Concerns 

Many students share similar worries. We can sum these up as follows: 

  • “Am I going to be replaced?” 
  • “If I use AI to study, is that cheating?” 
  • “What if AI gives me the wrong answer and I learn the wrong thing?” 
  • “What if I become too dependent on it?” 
  • “Will employers expect me to know AI tools?” 

These are fair questions. AI can help you learn, but it can also encourage shortcuts, create confusion, and build false confidence if you trust it too much. Remember to only use it when permitted according to academic rules, and ensure that when you do use it in practice, it supplements your human critical reasoning skills.  

Addressing Patient Concerns 

Patients often worry about: 

  • Privacy and confidentiality 
  • Bias or unfair outcomes 
  • Mistakes that are hard to catch 
  • Feeling like they are being treated by a machine instead of a person 

Canada’s guidelines on AI in health care emphasize responsible and ethical adoption, including transparency, safety, and trust. When working with patients, it’s important to be honest and disclose when and where it is used, and respect requests not to use them when they arise. The core of the patient-practitioner relationship must remain intact as it is fundamentally based on human connection and empathy.  

Addressing Educator Concerns  

Educators worry about: 

  • Academic integrity and original work 
  • Unequal access to technology 
  • Students submitting AI-written work without understanding it 
  • Skills erosion (for example, weak communication, weak charting habits) 

The goal is not to ban everything. The goal is to use AI in ways that improve learning without replacing learning. Educators must also stay up-to-date on industry practices that use AI tools so students are ready to use them in the real world. 

Where AI Can Help in the Classroom When Used Properly 

In a career training environment, the best AI uses are usually the ones that support practice and understanding, not the ones that do the work for you. 

Here are six safe learning use cases students often benefit from: 

  1. Turning notes into simple study outlines (then checking them against your course materials) 
  1. Creating practice quiz questions based on topics you already learned 
  1. Role-playing patient communication scenarios (especially for tone, clarity, and empathy) 
  1. Practicing professional emails and workplace communication 
  1. Building a study plan and time management schedule for busy weeks 
  1. Brainstorming interview questions and improving resume phrasing 

In programs with hands-on components, AI can also support your learning by helping you reflect on scenarios and prepare for skill practice. For example, ABES highlights simulation as an integral part of the Practical Nurse Diploma program because realistic practice builds job-ready confidence.  

Where AI is Not Helpful (and Where it Can Be Unsafe) 

Just because AI can generate an answer does not mean it is right. In health care training, AI is generally not a good idea for: 

  • Skills practice that requires hands-on repetition (you cannot “AI” your way into muscle memory) 
  • Medication decisions, dosing, contraindications, or patient-specific clinical guidance 
  • Any assignment where the goal is to test your own thinking and writing 
  • Exams and graded evaluations where AI use is not explicitly allowed 
  • Replacing official sources, policies, and procedures with AI-generated summaries 

Remember, in health care, small errors can lead to real harm. 

Privacy is Not Optional in Healthcare 

One of the biggest AI issues in health care is privacy. 

In Alberta, health information is governed by legal rules around collection, use, disclosure, and protection. Many people working in health settings are considered “affiliates” under Alberta’s Health Information Act framework, meaning privacy responsibilities apply broadly across roles, not only to doctors and nurses.  

At the national level, Canada’s privacy regulators have also issued principles for responsible, privacy-protective generative AI, including clear expectations around legal authority, consent, and protecting personal information.  

What this means for students is simple: 

  • Never put real patient information into a public AI tool. 
  • In practicum settings, follow the site’s policies and your instructor’s guidance. 
  • When in doubt, treat all patient information as protected. 

What Students Should Know Ahead of Time  

If you want to feel confident about AI in school and in your future job, these basics matter: 

  • AI is a support tool, not a source of truth. 
  • Always verify important information using trusted course materials or official references. 
  • Learn to ask better questions, but also learn to question the answers you get back. 
  • Do not use AI to replace your own writing practice. Clear writing is a job skill in health care. 
  • Keep privacy in mind every time, even for “small” details. 
  • Expect rules to vary by instructor, course, and practicum site. 

It also helps to understand why many employers are cautious. Statistics Canada found that among businesses not planning to adopt AI, concerns included privacy and security (8.1%), lack of knowledge about AI capabilities (11.3%), and the view that AI is not mature enough (7.6%).  

How AI May Affect the Patient and Practitioner Relationship 

AI can support care, but it can also damage trust. 

Done well, AI can: 

  • Reduce repetitive paperwork so practitioners have more time for patients 
  • Support clearer patient education materials (when reviewed by a human) 
  • Help reduce language barriers through translation support (with caution and confirmation) 

Done poorly, AI can: 

  • Create “template style” communication that feels cold 
  • Encourage overconfidence in incorrect information 
  • Reduce patient comfort if technology becomes the focus instead of the person 

Canadian physician organizations and medico-legal experts emphasize that safety, accountability, and risk management must stay central as AI tools enter clinical practice.  

AI Adoption in Canada: What the Numbers Suggest for Health Care Careers 

Students might hear that “AI is taking over everything,” but the Canadian data is more cautious. The statistics shared above show that it’s not yet used in the majority of business applications. But where it is being used, it helps with productivity and monotonous tasks.  

For roles like Unit Clerk and Medical Office Assistant, this points to practical workplace changes such as more automated scheduling, digital intake tools, templated documentation, and AI-assisted communication. ABES’s Unit Clerk and Medical Office Assistant program already emphasizes strong computer and productivity skills, chart management, order processing, and computerized data entry systems, which aligns with that direction.  

Will AI Replace Any Health Care Roles? 

A common fear is that AI will eliminate jobs. In health care, full replacement is rare because of safety and regulation concerns, privacy constraints, accountability, ethical responsibilities and the need for hands-on care and human support.  

The Canadian data support that most employers are not planning mass job cuts because of AI. Statistics Canada reported that among businesses already using AI (second quarter of 2025), 89.4% reported no change in employment levels, while 6.3% reported a decrease and 4.3% reported an increase. Those numbers are encouraging and tell us that technology is not a replacement for real humans.  

It is also helpful to think in terms of job change, not job loss. Statistics Canada found that among businesses planning to implement AI, about half planned to train current staff to use AI (49.8%).  The research on AI exposure in Canadian jobs suggests many workers are in roles that may be highly exposed to AI-related change, but that exposure can be complementary, meaning AI can add new tasks and shift work rather than simply removing the role.  

That said, some administrative roles do face pressure to do more with better software. For example, Job Bank’s outlook notes that trends like advanced software and automation may lead to more complex tasks and fewer positions in the future for the broader occupational group connected to medical clerk type work.  

The best protection is strong training plus adaptability. 

How Students Can Prepare for AI-Driven Changes in Health Care Jobs

  1. Build strong fundamentals first (terminology, documentation, safety procedures, professionalism). 
  1. Practice clear written communication, because AI does not replace human accountability.

  1. Treat privacy like a core competency, not an afterthought. 
  1. Ask good questions in practicum and observe how your site handles technology. 
  1. Remember to always put patient care first.
