How to Prepare for the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE) & What to Expect in Alberta

How to Prepare for the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination

The Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE) is the national exam that practical nursing graduates must pass to become licensed in Canada. In Alberta, passing the CPNRE is required to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). The exam covers all core areas of practical nursing to ensure you have the necessary knowledge and skills to provide safe patient care as a new nurse.

What is the CPNRE, and Why Is It Required?

The CPNRE is a national exam covering the core topics from your practical nursing program. In Alberta, you must pass this exam to earn your LPN license – it proves that you have the competencies needed to practice safely.

How to Prepare for the CPNRE

Preparing for the CPNRE takes planning and steady study. Here are some tips to help you succeed:

Review your nursing knowledge

Make a study schedule to review all major topics from your accredited LPN program. Go over your notes and textbooks, studying a bit each day in the weeks before the exam instead of cramming. If a topic is difficult, ask an instructor or classmate for help.

Use exam prep resources

Practice with CPNRE study guides and sample exams. This will familiarize you with the question format and highlight areas where you need more review. The more you practice, the more comfortable you will become with the exam’s style and time limits.

Consider taking a structured prep course

Some colleges and organizations offer CPNRE preparation courses that guide you through the exam’s key areas. These courses often include practice tests, study guides, and instructor-led reviews to help you focus on high-yield content.

Use active study techniques

Instead of just reading, try active recall, teaching a topic to someone else, or using flashcards. This helps reinforce your memory and improve retention.

Practice time management

The CPNRE is a timed exam, so work on answering questions efficiently. Use practice exams to get used to pacing yourself within the four-hour limit.

Take care of yourself

Good study habits include breaks, proper sleep, and a healthy diet. Being well-rested and relaxed on exam day can improve your performance.

What to Expect on Exam Day

Knowing what to expect on exam day will help you feel more at ease:

Before the Exam

  • Check-in: Arrive at the test center about 30 minutes early. Bring a government-issued photo ID. You’ll sign in and secure your personal items (no phones, notes, or bags allowed in the room).
  • Exam format: The CPNRE is a computer-based test with around 165 multiple-choice questions to answer in up to 4 hours

During the exam

Read each question carefully and choose the best answer. There’s no penalty for guessing, so answer every question, even if you’re not sure.

After the exam

You won’t get your score immediately. The CLPNA will notify you of your result within a few days to a few weeks. If you pass, you can move forward with getting your LPN license. If you don’t pass, you’ll receive instructions on how to prepare and register for a rewrite.

Registration and Licensing with CLPNA

After passing the CPNRE, you must complete a few final steps with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) to get your LPN license. Apply to the CLPNA for your practice permit. As a new graduate, you can usually get a temporary graduate permit to work under supervision while you wait for your exam results. You’ll need to submit proof of graduation and pay the required fees.

Once you have passed the CPNRE and met all requirements, the CLPNA will issue your full LPN license. Congratulations – you’re now an LPN in Alberta
